Plan for success before disaster strikes
Catastrophes can happen without warning and can cause significant damage to your business. As many as two of every five small businesses hit by a major disaster never reopen because they were unprepared, according to various reports.
How will your business survive? Where do you begin? Prepare today so an unexpected emergency won’t be the end of the line for your business.
The Business Emergency Planning Association, American Red Cross Cleveland chapter, brings together knowledge, expertise and experience to help businesses, nonprofits and government agencies prepare for potential emergencies and deal with actual disasters.
Most often we think of disasters as a fire, hurricane or some other devastating event…but the truth is that proper preparation involves all sorts of scenarios that could become disasters…What if…
- a snowstorm shuts the roads for two days?
- your servers go down unexpectedly?
- a key supplier suffers its own disaster?
- a flu epidemic decimates your staff?
BEPA helps you think of all the “what ifs,” then guides you in developing the answers most beneficial for your business, including how your business will:
- continue operating?
- retrieve essential data?
- meet customer demands?
- communicate with employees?
Organizations concerned with business continuity belong to BEPA to:
- Attend workshops, lectures and seminars that cover topics ranging from plan development to site recovery and media relations.
- Participate in the annual Business Continuity Planning Conference, a daylong event for everyone from beginners to experts. In addition to multiple seminars, the day is an opportunity to network and interact with others facing similar issues as well as vendor solution providers.
- Identify custom presentation opportunities through the American Red Cross that help business continuity planners bring the knowledge to their workplaces to further solidify the need for planning and action.
- Receive BEPA discounts, including savings on CPR/AED training sessions provided by the American Red Cross.

| Testimonial from Cleveland Indians |
The positive relationship between the Cleveland Indians and the Red Cross Business Emergency Planning Association has helped us to enhance our plans at Jacobs Field for disaster prevention, response, and recovery. These efforts were achieved with the use of tabletop and live exercises involving a variety of potential scenarios. The annual seminar provides a wealth of knowledge and the opportunity to interact directly with the experts in the field.
The Cleveland Indians have an extended history with BEPA, and its predecessor BICEPP. Initially, we worked in concert to study a series of tabletop exercises that involved Cleveland Indians operational, safety and maintenance personnel interacting with the emergency personnel from Cleveland Police, Fire, and EMS. We then expanded these exercises to include front-line security, host-greeter staff, and First Aid personnel. The involvement of all levels of our operational personnel and the lessons learned proved to be invaluable.
Ultimately, BEPA’s guidance led us to a full-scale exercise simulating a mass casualty incident during an Indians game. This exercise involved the mobilization of the Cleveland Fire Department and approximately 15 pieces of fire apparatus, a live decontamination process, Cleveland Police and SWAT, implementation and placement of an Incident Command Center, Cuyahoga County emergency personnel, area hospitals and the Mayor of Cleveland. Invaluable lessons learned.
On a continuing basis through our commitment to the SAC and participation in the annual conference, the Cleveland Indians are proud to be a Gold Sponsor with the Red Cross BEPA program.
