Sport Saftey

This course was designed in partnership with the United States Olympic Committee to provide injury prevention and first aid skills to coaches of all sports and all ages of athletes. Coaches receive training in Adult CPR/AED; Child CPR (optional); and first aid for soft-tissue injuries, muscle, bone, and joint injuries; and sudden illnesses, such as seizures, diabetic emergencies, stroke, poisoning, fainting, vomiting, bites and stings, and heat and cold-related emergencies.

Injury/illness prevention topics include causes of sports injuries, pre-participation physical exams, coaching responsibilities, an emergency action plan, checking facilities, equipment selection and use, supervising athletes, training methods, and return-to-play guidelines. Prevention of psychological injury is also discussed.

The course is accepted by the Ohio Department of Education for Pupil Activity Supervisor Validation mandated by ORC 251-97. The course is held in one eight-hour session and includes lecture, discussion, video, and hands-on practice.
